CEO Conversation: From Crisis to Clarity: Leading with Vision in Tough Times

Overview

How do nonprofit leaders manage emergencies while staying true to their vision?

This session equipped nonprofit CEOs with tactics to balance crisis response with long-term goals.

Together, we discussed how to maintain momentum, even in challenging times, whether caused by hurricanes, elections, pandemics, or internal problems.

5 Takeaways from the Session:

  1. Prioritize Mindset: Recognizing when we’re operating “above or below the line” can empower us to stay mission-focused and creative.
  2. Focus on Staff Well-being: Supporting staff emotionally and logistically allows them to perform at their best. This might include mental health first aid training,  check-ins on personal milestones, and reassuring staff that they have authority without second-guessing.
  3. Adapt to Changing Needs in Crises: Emergencies evolve, and so do needs. Leaders remain flexible, adapt strategies to meet situations, and ensure responses align with both immediate and long-term goals. Don’t forget to debrief.
  4. Promote Safety and Belonging with Proactive Communication Use phone trees before, during, and after emergencies to keep everyone informed, create community, and reinforce belonging.. Consider weekly 30-minute calls featuring updates, quotes, or humor to keep teams feeling informed and connected.
  5. Lead with Confidence and Talk About Your Mission: In challenging moments, stay calm and focus getting above the line. Leading with poise  and keeping the mission front of mind helps the team remain resilient and confident, and remember they’re equipped and you’re facing challenges for a bigger cause.
