Creating Strategy

  • A Rose By Any Other Name: Create a strategic plan, work plan, or three-year plan. Add milestones and celebrate results in one months to three months.
  • Why Strategy? Discerns how will we distinguish ourselves and flourish in our community. How will you lead in the field?
  • Engagement: Strategic plan are best with staff and board engagement in the process of developing them.

Refining Strategy

  • Get Clear: Invest time to get clear on strategic plan activities. How will we do them? Narrow down the options in the planning phase. Be sure items in your plans are actionable. Make it tangible, get buy-in and agreement.
  • Evaluation: Ask how you will evaluate activity in the planning phase. How do you monitor? Dashboard. Cascade software.

Implementation

  • Early Bird: Do you mission thinking and work early.
  • The Boss: “The strategic plan is my supervisor.” Would this work in your setting.
  • Role Play: When you become a CEO, recognize that your roles in the nonprofit is different. Delegate and communicate that you’re delegating so you have more time to lead.
  • Use “line of site” so staff and volunteers know how work is relevant to the mission. Empower your team you. Trust your people. Coach as needed.
  • Not a Best Kept Secret. Develop a communication plan to message what you’re doing.
