Boards That Fundraise, 3 Easy Ways for Boards to Fundraise without Asking for Money

People working at a board meetingIn a recent article, I wrote about Boards Who Won’t Help Fundraise. This time, let’s talk about boards that do. What actions do board members take to help fundraise? According to your responses from a recent survey, boards who help fundraise most commonly take these three actions:

1. Donate Generously

Leaders model behaviors they want others to copy. According to BoardSource, 74 percent of board members participate in giving. Best practice? One hundred percent of your board member give. Establish this standard as a baseline. Over time encourage more generous gifts. For example, one client’s yearly board donations exceed $7 million.

2. Introduce Friends, Co-workers, and Acquaintances

If you don’t have enough donors (and who does?) enlarge your community. Board members help fundraise, without having to ask for money, by inviting new people. Help your board members regularly and intentionally vet friends and acquaintances to discover their connections to your mission.

3. Bring New People to Events

Future events can provide board members urgency to scan their contacts and determine whom to invite before tickets sell out. Board members help fundraise when they bring new people to events that raise money and invite attendees to become new donors.

Do you want more help fundraising? Make specific requests. If your board does not help with fundraising now, ask for donations, introductions, and invitations. If your board already helps, congratulate them. Ask them how you can help them continue and bump up their support.
